EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED…Visit to La Posada, Winslow and local surroundings

April 19, 2017 - April 22, 2017

Wednesday, April 19 to Saturday, April 22

La Posada is one of the best driveouts of the year!

Our driveout will include a stop for lunch along the way as we wind our way through the Tonto National Forest, spritz through Payson, over a portion of the high desert and on into Winslow.  The beautiful La Posada Hotel had much history of its own but there will be much to see over our three days there.  The following are recommended, perhaps seeing one or two and enjoying the hotel and the environs the rest of the time.

Homolovi State Park is a state park in Winslow, Arizona preserving over 300 Ancestral Puebloan archaeological sites. Homolovi or Homol’ovi is a Hopi word meaning “place of the little hills”.

Petrified Forest National Park near Holbrook, is a United States national park known for its fossils, especially fallen trees that lived in the Late Triassic Period, about 225 million years ago.  In the 16th century, Spanish explorers visited the area, and by the mid-19th century a U.S. team had surveyed an east–west route through the area where the park is now located and noted the petrified wood.

Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site is a historic site on Highway 191, north of Chambers, with an exhibit center in Ganado, Arizona. It is considered a meeting ground of two cultures between the Navajo and the settlers who came to the area to trade.  The squeaky wooden floor greets your entry into the oldest operating trading post on the Navajo Nation.  When your eyes adjust to the dim light in the “bullpen” you find you’ve just entered a mercantile.  Hubbell’s has been serving Ganado selling groceries, grain, hardware, horse tack, coffee and Native American Art since 1878. Ann and I visited here last year and found it well worth the travel time to get there!

La Posada is the last great railroad hotel built in 1929 by the Santa Fe Railway for the Fred Harvey Company.  Get your reservations at La Posada as soon you can as it is a popular destination!

Steve and Ann Marten

  1. Sorry all,
Ann has learned this past weekend at the Rotary President-Elect Training Seminar (PETS) and Conference in Phoenix that she will not be able to go due to upcoming meetings and responsibilities on those dates. When I hear back from Ron, I will ask him to call for another Leader volunteer at the Wednesday, 8-March meeting. This trip is well worth it – hope many of you will go!
